The sky breaths slowly,
in & out, in slow steady gusts of darkness,
& the snoring rumble of distant storms unseen
& the sky is empty. I walk softly,
for the night's great eye is closed tonight in slumber
& i wonder
Should i still howl to the empty sky?
listening, i hear silence:
i hear the birds shift positions in the bushes.
i hear a the cars race by beyond the houses.
i hear a rabbit startle as i pass.
i hear the wind in the trees, singing.
i hear my own footsteps, soft crunching of shoe-soles on pavement.
i hear my heartbeat, & the slow pulse of the earth beneath.
i hear my thoughts, & the airy drifting of the clouds above.
the silence bids me hold my tongue.
I do not howl to the empty sky,
but sing silence to the night.
& as in silence i hear, so in darkness i see.
