Mikhail Bakhtin: a Russian literary critic. Disapproved of any organized system for interpreting literature. Very interested in forms of parody and the interaction/competition of languages and forms of languages. Once used the word 'seriolaughing.'

My evil plan is to use this fellow's theories on heteroglossy and satire to analyze a gag dub of a japanese tv show about a children's card game. But not that children's card game, a different one. This will be rambling and not pretty but it will be practise for lit class and kind of fun for me so oh well ^-^;

DUEL MASTERS EP ONE

Actually before that, Bakhtin would be quite interested in the idea of dubbing. We take a foreign product and import it, changing the voices and altering the cultural context, leading to a rich interplay of conflicting visual and auditory cultural/language content. He would also love the self-awareness of the product Plastic Cow Productions has created with this dub; this show knows that it is silly and realizes the absurdity of taking a piece of art across the ocean and passing it off as western with new voices.

The main character is named Shobu! I know because they say it like ten times in the opening sequence. He has a nerdy friend with a nasaly voice and a friend who is a girl. He is good at a card game and wants to be a kaijudo master. The dub does not explain what a kaijudo master is or why he would want to be one; it merely throws the other-languaged word at us. It is a foreign word and has 'judo' in it. That plus the word 'master' leaves us thinking more of kung-fu than a card game. Furthermore, they don't explain anything about the card game that this world is based around. All we get is 3d effects and the stylized names of the card.

The main character's dad looks EXACTLY like him only bigger. Same clothes same hair. It is a bit silly.

Overall first ep was a big light on the self-mockery, except for the stadium announcers who use a classic set of sports announcer voices. Shobu beat a guy who cheated in a way that made no sense then he battled some older guy who wanted to make him a kaijudo master. I watched ep one yesterday and didn't pay too too much attention so anyway on to the next one.
