Fall is coming
And all the leaves will fall
Leaving bare, lonely branches.
And the needles
On the tall, proud evergreens
Will seem all the brighter.
Well! It's about 8 o'clock now, so if I'd woken up just now (which I didn't) I'd have had 5 and a half hours of sleep! I woke up at like 5 am, tossed and turned pointlessly for a couple hours then got up at seven-something. Obviously it is journal time. ^-^
It's weird; I usually do get about seven-eight hours of sleep if only because I tend to stay in bed as long as possible, but when I don't I've never actually noticed myself slowing down... Actually I think I did better in high school when heavily sleep-deprived; the sorta zombie state temporarily rendered my mind incapable of wandering. And, once I actually drag myself out of bed, you could say I'm something of a 'morning person'; I usually feel calm and clear-headed and think 'hmmm I should do this more often maybe, it adds three or four pretty good hours to the day.' It helps that my AD/HD meds work sort of like coffee, only much more so.
I've been meaning to write something about my job for a bit so here goes. I work at Safeway as a courtesy clerk, which means bagging groceries, dealing with carts, carrying things to people's cars and doing every other little errand than needs doing. And I really like my job. Not that I particularly enjoy any of the stuff I do, but I can really appreciate it. For one thing, Safeway tries really hard to create a good atmosphere for everyone, because we're not the cheapest store so we have to make people want to come in ^-^; Also, our manager type people, while not perfect, are really good at what they do. The lead manager is also very good with people, I just wish he'd lay off on the back-patting a little <.<; but oh well.
Also, because of the nature of the job, I get to both walk around all day and do a whole bunch of different things. This is in stark contrast to the cashiers' job, which is to stand in one place all day and deal with an endless stream of customers >.< I'm very glad I'm not a cashier. My least favourite part of the job (besides pushing carts through half-frozen slush in minus 20 degree weather, which trumps everything) is standing behind the cashier putting things in bags. Fortunately the cashier takes the brunt of the social responsibility and I can usually get by with a few stock phrases unless I'm feeling weirdly social or the customer has bought like two pounds of birdseed and wants to talk about all her pet parrots ^-^ (that lady is still my favourite customer ever.) My most favourite part of the job is probably sweeping, because that just means pushing a dustmop through the store on a set route that I've walked a hundred times, so I can set my feet on autopilot and let my mind wander. Also, the store needs to be swept every two hours and you usuallly get a break about every two hours, and they both usually take about fifteen minutes so if I stagger them out right I get to do something I like at the beginning of every hour and the time goes by quick ^-^ The only downside is that doing more than two or three sweeps in a shift makes for sad footpaws >.> It's a lot of walking.
My coworkers are pretty cool for the most part. Although there is one older, slightly deaf lady who also works as courtesy clerk and I tend to end up doing extra work when she's there cause she's not so good at the job <.< But I don't really mind. Also, a lot of our workers are immigrants of some sort or another and I have trouble understanding accents in general, so with that plus autism I do a lot of friendly nodding at people who have just said something I did not even begin to understand.
There are even a few people I actually like. This one dude who works the self checkout sometimes is pretty cool, and one of my fellow courtesy clerks named Micheal (I hope that's his name anyway I'm awful at names <.<) is a real nice guy. Also, this one time when for some reason people came around and attached these awful things to our bagging racks that I think were supposed to help us somehow but in practice got in the way and bruised your elbows when you banged into them, he went and got a screwdriver and un-attached them. That is the kind of initiative I can respect >.>b Oh, we also used to have the nicest and also the tiniest Muslim girl you could imagine (seriously she was in charge of me but she looked like she should be in like grade ten) but one of her family members died or something and she had to go back to her home country I can't remember which one it is >.< I think she's coming back eventually though.
Wow that is a lot of rambling text >.> Actually, I suspect what I mean by 'clear headed' is that I'm actually slightly loopy, but that just cancels out my normal reserved-ness and lets me write long pointless blog posts about nothing in particular.
