concept artdump

i have decided start just tossing all the random stuff i draw in preparation for this comic up here!  sooo, here you go!

I think this is the first thing i ever drew for this!

aaand it's not actually TOO far off for maddy.  her head's actually a bit bigger than that relative to her height and her skin colour's not quite right here, but its not too far off.  I moved away from this much watercolouryness pretty quickly, though i still think this pic looks ok for what it is.

here's a later one of maddy for comparison.  still watercoloury though, i don't have a PROPERLY coloured drawing for her yet.  this is the correct skin colour and proportions, though.  she's actually quite short relative to most of the two-legged characters.

Beta main cast:

this is a pretty old drawing, but it shows all the characters fairly well!  There are five; top left is Cherish, top right is Iffy, bottom left is Ozz, bottom right is Catastrophe (Cat, for short)  and of course in the middle is Maddy.  Maddy and Ozz are both pretty much how they are now; Ozz's design has barely changed from the first sketch i drew of him in a school notebook.  Cherish doesn't have her distinctive hairdo in this pic, though she has a prototypal version.  Cat has changed subtly; mostly i've had to practice drawing cats quite a bit.  Iffy's design is now totally different from this and is still a bit up in the air; his eyes are much rounder now and his body is a very different shape, and the horns have become insect-like antenna.

Cherish, sketch

I had Cherish's general design and range of expression down in sketches for a while before I managed to get a polished drawing of her down.  The hair still looks a bit off to me though.

Bad shading, terrible drawing of Cherish:

i thought about not posting this one because meh, the expression is just so not Cherish, but i did anyway to show you how i was colouring these at first.  originally i had sorta a watercoloury look in mind for this, but it just doesn't look cartoony enough and clashes with the strong lines.

This is what Cherish ACTUALLY looks like:

Rounder eyes, different shaped face, white shoes/socks (originally a colouring error but i liked it better like this), white belt.  also, a cell shading technique using shade and luminosity layers that just works so much better than the watercolour brush thing.  i had soo much trouble getting Cherish's dark skin and bright orange/red hair to like right with the watercolours and it works out so easily like this.  the only element of this design i'm unsure of is whether her wings should be red like her hair (as i've drawn them) or white like her dress.  Also, hair!  Cherish's hair sort of shoots out in the front then droops down and is tricky to draw from different angles (almost typoed that as 'angels' there XD) but she looks completely wrong to me without.

Here's some bonus sketch-work of cherish.  she's fun to draw and i really wanted to get her hair figured out properly, you can sorta see it develop here!  also for some reason i have more sketches of her than anyone else saved on my computer, other people tend to have not gotten saved for some reason or to be in my school sketchbook.

and i hope you like sketches cause they're pretty much all i have of iffy!  you can sort of see the direction he's been going in though, i like to think.  i'm planning to bring back some elements of the butterfly motif from the original design.

Cat coloured:

Golden yellow kitty, bright pink eyes, bowtie.  I waver on whether the bowtie should be pink like his eyes or not.  The tail ring was an attempt to spice up the design a bit, since while the hat's cool the rest of his body is awfully plain.  his facial structure has been tweaked a bit since this.  Oh yeah, Cat's telekinetic too; that's how he does normal stuff despite lacking manipulators.

Repost from IC thingy!

There's cherish but we've talked about her.  i'm pretty proud of how her hair worked out from straight on, though.  This is also my best current coloured drawing of Ozz!  he is a little quadroped with big glasses, pointy little ears, green hair and a labcoat.  The 'fur' on the end of his tail is actually a sort of specialized hand; the fibers can move independently to grip things, and the whole tail is also prehensile and somewhat longer than it looks here.  i have to admit the way i draw Ozz as a quadroped is influenced quite a bit by my little pony, but he's not a horse or any particular sort of animal.

Ozz can go around on two legs sometimes if he has to, though it's easier if he can lean on something!  here we see him being unimpressed by something, and probably also being a bit taller than he actually is.

finally, my most recent drawing isn't of the main cast at all but of some side characters who crew a competing spaceship!

still a bit of a work in progress!  i need to figure out how to colour silly pirate man there, and his first mate needs some tweak's to her outfit; the catsuit type thing doesn't quite fit the character. plus i still need to name em both.  so still plenty of stuff to do. XP  anyway, that's all for the epic concept dump.  i'll probably upload more stuff in more of a trickle as i draw it!
